Becoming a Nomad Family 🚚

Updated: Nov 18, 2020

Home is where your family is.

This is something I have heard a few times before, but not something I have truly come to understand until quite recently. The past couple of months have brought some new emotions, scary realizations, weird and unfortunate circumstances, but also a new surge of excitement. Let me begin by telling you a little story.

If I started at the beginning, I would have to take you across the pond to the United Kingdom, more specifically to England. For those who know me personally, you are probably already aware of the fact that I was born in England because honestly, it's one of the many things I never stop talking about. Being a Brit has always been something I am proud of, an identity, and a piece of who I am. At the ripe old age of 6.5, my parents decided to take the leap and leave everything behind. In 2002, we packed up our belongings and shipped everything over to the United States! This was the first.

Let's jump ahead to 2009. We have been living in Connecticut for about 7 or so years now. This isn't a small chunk of time, especially for young children. Both my brother and I have some of the fondest memories of days spent on the beach, growing up with some truly amazing and lifelong friends, and surrounding ourselves with more opportunities than we could ever have imagined. Eventually, the time came for us to take another leap. This time it was more of a hop. The Milton Family was on the move again. We packed up again and made the move from Connecticut to Massachusetts. This was the second.

Of course, nothing ever really goes exactly to plan. When we moved to our new town my parents soon realized that we wouldn't find a permanent house before the school year started. Summer was quickly coming to an end and both Matt and I needed to get settled before school began. A rental was our home for the next couple of months. Then, in 2010 we found our home. Ironically the house we eventually bought ended up just down the street from us! This was the third.

Now I have successfully brought you up to date with the backstory. This leads us to 2018 where we truly became a Nomad Milton Family. I moved off to college a few years ago, and soon enough Matt was following in my footsteps. He is currently wrapping up his first year at McGill University in Canada. As was planned for a while, my parents decided with the two kids out of the house it would be a great time to move again. So in 2018, we said goodbye to another house. This was the fourth.

Well, you might be wondering...where are the Milton's now??

That right there is a very good question.  Although we have successfully sold our home, we have yet to find the next one. This has resulted in a little bit of bouncing around. Over the past few months, we have found ourselves shuffling from one apartment to and Airbnb to yet another apartment. Matt and I have been at school for most of the moving around, but every now and then we have been able to get back and help out on school breaks. What's next for the Milton Family? Well, this is something I am still unsure of myself.

I bet there are a few of you reading this and thinking how awful it sounds to move and uproot yourself and your family so many times. Here's how I have experienced it. Moving and traveling has shaped me into the person I am today. With each move, I have come to realize just how fantastic my family is. They are awesome! We are constantly reminded that home is where the family is. It doesn't matter where we end up, as long as we are together it feels like home. It's not just my Mum, my Dad, and my brother, it's all those we connect with along the way. Those family friends in England, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont, are all part of my home. We have joked quite a lot recently that we are technically homeless at the moment. In fact, I feel quite the opposite. I feel like one of the luckiest people in the world because I am homefull.

A special thank you to my parents for giving me the opportunities to travel and see the world in so many different ways. I owe you guys so very much. ♥️
