Day two took me outside of Amsterdam to the Netherland's second-largest metropolis. I was forewarned that this might not be the most exciting city to visit but I took the chance anyway. Only being 45 minutes from Amsterdam by train it didn't seem like much of a risk. Well, it should have taken 45 minutes... but typical me got on the wrong train. Although I bought a direct ticket to Rotterdam, I found myself on an indirect train which took a little longer. Luckily I got on an earlier train anyway so I arrived around the same time as originally planned.
Rotterdam was lovely! The first place on my list was a coffee shop which of course was closed until December 1st. So I turned around and went to the second planned stop which was the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. This was another art museum which varied from surrealism to contemporary installations. Overall, I thought it was very interesting. Being much larger than I had originally interpreted, I found myself lost in there for over an hour! After finishing up at the museum I decided to walk around. I found myself in a nice coffee shop where I sat down and ate some lunch, drank some coffee, and tucked into my favorite book. This has to be one of my most-liked things about traveling alone thus far. There was no schedule, no planned agenda. I was able to relax and enjoy my book and my coffee without feeling the slightest sense of rush. (Oh yeah! I tried chips and mayo for the first time...I like it!) After lunch, I headed over to the cube houses. This was a piece of architecture I had seen pictures of and wanted to see for myself. These were COOL! I would have loved to see the inside but I wasn't about to welcome myself into someone's apartment or business. My last stop was the Marketplace. This was another piece of architecture I was eager to see. Luckily for me, there was no chance of getting lost because it was directly opposite the cube houses. This massive building had a beautiful indoor mural and tons of food stands set up. It took me about 6 laps to decide which chocolate shop I wanted to buy from. I settled on one and bought my friend a gift of chocolate tulips!
After wrapping up at the market I made my way back to the train station where I proceeded to get on the correct train this time... and found myself back in Amsterdam much faster than before. This was the point in my trip when I started to see myself settling it. I was able to walk right out of the station and hop on the correct tram to take me back to the apartment. I even knew exactly how to get back without taking out the GPS! (Go me! 🤗) I cooked dinner in the apartment and after a few phone and skype calls later I called it an evening. On to tomorrow, another adventure altogether!
